The FXB shelter: a haven of peace for jaipur’s street children

Context

A child goes missing every 10 minutes in India. Only half of them are found. Some are kidnapped or sold to child traffickers, while most run away to escape poverty, abuse, or mistreatment by their families. They use the railway network to travel to major cities where they hope to find a better life. Once on the terminal platform, they are completely bewildered, lost, and frightened amid the chaos, unsure of what to do. The fate of Jaipur’s slum children is similar. They end up begging or collecting rags and waste left by travelers. They are also easy prey for child traffickers who recruit them for criminal activities or force them into prostitution or forced labor.

For hundreds of children, the FXB day shelter is their only haven of peace and security! The Covid-19 pandemic has made these children even more vulnerable, and we greatly need your support to continue helping them!

Our Action

The FXB day shelter

The FXB Day Shelter welcomes approximately 40 street children from Jaipur and surrounding slums every day. For these boys and girls aged 4 to 18, the FXB shelter is their only haven of peace and security. They come to receive food, wash themselves, clean their clothes, rest from the chaos, and receive appropriate medical and psychological care. Many try to escape their harsh reality by consuming cheap psychoactive substances like Tip-Ex or paint thinners, so it is also about raising awareness about the risks of drug addiction and trying to wean them off. The children also benefit from informal education – with the hope, for some, of rejoining the formal education system – and basic computer training is offered to older children.

Considerable work is undertaken in terms of developing essential psychosocial and interpersonal skills, which will help build resilience in our youth and assist them in better integrating into society. Themes such as gender equality, sexual and reproductive health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, sexual abuse and violence, self-respect and respect for others, leadership development, and financial planning are addressed and worked on with them throughout the sessions.

The FXB team continuously works to rescue these children from the streets and the clutches of traffickers through family reunification or placement with foster families or government structures. Unfortunately, the older the child, the more complex the work becomes.
