Earthquake in Myanmar
The Association François-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB Suisse) mobilized to respond to the health emergency along the Irrawaddy River
On March 28, 2025, a violent earthquake struck several regions of Myanmar, causing extensive material and human damage. The FXB association, which has been present in the country for over 30 years, immediately activated its emergency measures to help the stricken population.
The integrity of the majority of FXB's infrastructure has been preserved overall, despite some moderately serious material damage. Our teams in Yangon, Mawlamyine, Taunggyi and Mandalay are safe and sound, and continue to provide unstinting support to local communities.
FXB floating clinics: a pillar of healthcare for isolated communities
For the past five years, FXB has been operating two floating clinics on the Irrawaddy River, mobile hospitals designed to reach the most remote populations in a country where access to healthcare is a constant challenge, particularly in rural areas.
Immediate response in Mandalay after the earthquake
Following the earthquake, the two clinics were called back to Mandalay on March 29 to treat the many injured. Around a hundred consultations are carried out every day. A tent has been set up nearby to accommodate those unable to get to the boats. Emergency kits are also distributed to patients.
A solar charging system for cell phones has also been installed to enable residents to stay connected with their loved ones despite power cuts.
Preventing a secondary health crisis
Extreme temperatures in Mandalay are leading to fears of an outbreak of water-borne diseases and cholera. To avert a major health crisis, FXB is launching an urgent appeal for solidarity to finance the distribution of hygiene kits, drinking water and rehydration solutions, essential medicines and medical equipment, and mosquito nets and protective tarpaulins.
