A REFUGE BETWEEN STEEL AND GLACE
In tribute to François-Xavier Bagnoud's stopovers in this place he cherished, the FXB Foundation financed the construction of this mountain hut, inaugurated in 1996, in place of the former avalanche shelter in 1988.
Perched at 2,641 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Grand Combin, Cabane FXB dominates the Corbassière glacier, in the heart of the Valais Alps. From Fionnay, in the Val de Bagnes, three hours of walking are needed to reach this true eagle nest, nestled in the Combinian massif.
Work by architects Michel Perraudin and Philippe Vaudan, the hut is distinguished by its unique design: its seven sections in zinc-titan color rock remind the facets of a quartz crystal. Combining tradition and modernity, it offers a capacity for a hundred beds and incorporates technical innovations such as solar panels and efficient sanitary facilities.
Nearby, the Path of Meditation pays tribute to the missing people in the massif and ends on a promontory overhanged by a Christ of the sculptor Louis Bruchez.
